Getting the Most Out of an Exterior Wash

A wash goes better and lasts longer with a bit of thought beforehand. None of this takes long.

Ten minutes of prep

Move cars, bins and anything light off the areas being cleaned
Check the windows are properly shut, not just pulled to
Take down wall hangings, flags and wind chimes
Move cushions and light furniture off the patio
Say something about any window seal or screen you already know is failing

That last one saves an awkward conversation later. Old seals sometimes let water in regardless of how careful anyone is, and it helps to know in advance.

Time it sensibly

Do it before you list the house, before a party, or before you seal a driveway. Sealing over algae just locks it in.

Do not do it the morning of an event. Concrete looks patchy while it dries.

Do the whole thing at once

Washing the house but not the driveway makes the driveway look worse than it did before. The contrast is unforgiving.

Getting everything done in one visit is also cheaper than three separate trips.

What makes it last

Trim back branches touching the roof or walls, since shade brings algae back fastest
Point sprinklers away from walls and concrete
Clear the gutters so overflow is not running down the wall
Deal with oil drips when they happen

Set expectations honestly

A wash removes what is on the surface. It does not fix cracked stucco, faded paint, or a roof at the end of its life.

Old stains often fade a long way rather than disappearing. Anyone promising a perfect result on decades-old concrete is overselling it.
